The Supreme graphic depicted on this beanie was originally created in 1991 by art director Craig Stecyk. It was designed for a trade show booth that Stecyk conceptualized based on the "Energy For An Empty Tank World" advertisement from 1979. This gas station-themed booth included vintage pumps, oil cans, and 200 hub caps. The Supreme graphic was used to decorate the pumps.

After the trade show, the Supreme graphic continued to be leveraged in advertising and printed on various merchandise like t-shirts, sweatshirts, and stickers. The design's origins thus trace back to that 1991 trade show activation, which itself was inspired by the earlier 1979 advertisement.
